Nigel Mansell On The Grand Tour: What He Said

Nigel Mansell, the renowned British racing driver, certainly made his mark on the world of motorsports. As a three-time Formula One World Champion, he was one of the most dominant drivers of his generation. In a 2015 appearance on the popular British TV show "The Grand Tour," Mansell shared his thoughts on a variety of topics related to racing, including his early days as a driver, his time at Williams, and his thoughts on modern-day Formula One. In this article, we'll delve into what Mansell had to say during his time on the show.

Early Days and Wild Cards

During his chat with Jeremy Clarkson on "The Grand Tour," Mansell reminisced about his early days in motorsports. When asked about his first experience with racing cars, Mansell recounted a humorous encounter with a car, saying: "I think it was a Lotus Elan, and I took it out one Sunday morning, and I terrified my parents." 1

Mansell recalled the story as one that perfectly encapsulated his burgeoning relationship with racing. He explained that it was his father, a keen mechanic himself, who identified potential in his son and set him down the path of motorsports: "I think my father was the one who got me really involved with racing, got me into karting, and then sort of pushed me into a go-kart, and I took to it like a duck to water." 2

These early influences would contribute significantly to Mansell's rapid rise in the motorsports world, as he studied Electronic Engineering, worked as a tool-maker, and eventually started his racing career. He demolished the competition in both Formula Three and International Formula Two before moving to Formula One in 1980.

As mentioned earlier, Mansell had a distinguished career with the Williams F1 Team, leaving in 1995 after winning the drivers' title in 1992 and finishing runner-up the following year. His time at Williams was a crucial stage in his progression. When questioned about his time at the team, Mansell emphasized the synergy he experienced with the Williams team.

Mansell remembered the conversation he had with Patrick Head shortly before he joined the team:

He asked me what my goals were for the next two years, and I remember saying that I wanted to win a championship with Williams, and he basically said that we share the same goal, which was that.

When Mansell achieved his goal in 1992, the whole team celebrated. "We won 14 races, and set 23 poles—that year was an unbelievable period of our lives."
